Glossop Inter-League

Glossop have got a busy few weeks ahead of them. On Sunday the 30th March Glossop will entertain an in form Ilkeston side.  Ilkeston are apparently weaker than last years championship runners up side but with two wins from two they will travel in good spirits.  Glossop and Ilkeston will both be representing Derbyshire one week later at Great Yarmouth as both sides were in the top four last time around.

On the 3rd of April 4 Glossop based players will be attempting to qualify for the world championships.  Three White Hart A players in Steve "The Mexican Bennett", Perry "Mr Magoo" Roberts and Graham Roberts will be traveling along with Paul "Jiff" Smith (Derbyshire County Champion) to compete in the early and lets hope latter qualifying rounds for the world championships held annually in Blackpool around June time.

The following day the rest of the squad will be arriving to compete in the national team finals.   Last years highlight was Paul "Robbo" Roberts late night disco dancing (pictured below).

(Sorry Robbo)

Glossop who were in a very unfortunate position of only having eight players last time around will be hoping having a full compliment will give them a far better chance of progressing.  This time around Glossop face a fairly local derby when they play Miscues of Barnsley (more local than any of their Derbyshire opponents) and Kettering.  This is not a terrible draw for the Glossop boys as they have avoided all the big guns and this should give them a fighting chance of progressing out of their group.  I'm sure Tom Fahy will totally disagree when he writes his EPA pre event report and will have Kettering as going through with us being whipping boys.  Mind you most of Derbyshire have been writing us off for two years and most of them have learnt we are definitely not a push over, hopefully the country will find that out too.

Moving swiftly on then Glossop have then got Derbyshire Inter-League Cup Day which is in two parts this year in April.  Top four saw qualification for the October finals and Glossop will be aiming to repeat the run that saw them come of age last year after losing their opening three league games. As always you can keep up to date on www.glossoppool.co.uk and whilst we can't do live reporting from Yarmouth full reports and Mark Smith's diaries aged 15 and 3/4 part two will be hot off the presses when we return home.

Monday League Chairman Resigns

Here is a statement compiled by outgoing chairman Mr Mark Smith.

"Due to work commitments I will no longer be able to have anything to do with the running of the league. The committee members will now just be Ian Sanders & Alan Spurrell. There are other reasons for my decision and those people close to me and my team will know what they are. When I mentioned to Ian last week about me possibly resigning he said that he wasn't prepared to put the time and effort into the league so in which case the league will possibly fold. I do hope it doesn't get to this state."

This casts the league in to major doubt without a chairman at the helm, once further information is released to me I shall keep everyone informed.  For ongoing discussion please visit the community part of glossoppool.

Sponsorship ( Update)

In a change to our initial plan football cards will be in most of the pool venues this weekend they will all carry a 20 pounds winners prize and funds generated will help go towards to teams shirts etc.  We would be very grateful if you could help us out and who knows you might scoop some Easter drinking money in the process.

Thanks for any help you give,

James

Sponsorship

The Glossop Inter-league team have stepped up their search for a team sponsor for the 2008 season in order to travel to Yarmouth for the national team finals in April.  James Hardy and Perry Roberts have done interviews with High Peak Radio and The Glossop Chronicle. The Chronicle have done a spread on the back page with a large photo and hopefully this will help attract a sponsor and generate enough money to buy new team shirts and help fund some the considerable expenses Glossop will incur in not only taking the trip to Yarmouth but also the many trips of up to 200 miles Glossop make every single season.  If any site member knows anyone prepared to sponsor the Glossop  Team then please get in touch with myself or Perry.

Ilkeston Open 08

Glossop managed to send 3 players to this 12 pound a man 32 runner event which actually a 34 runner event come kick off time.  With a few big names such as Mark White, Liam Bullock and Tim Singh all entering it would be a true test for Steve Bennett, Paul Smith and Mike Morrison.  Steve drew Steve Lees in round one and won the deciding frame for a 5-4 victory.  Paul Smith had a number of very good chances and didn't have one of his usual stunning days and was beaten by Jack Whelan although both players agreed that the score line flattered Jack.  Mike Morrison played local John Mc Mahon who is county B this season and a very decent player.  John won 5-3 but Mike gave a very good account of himself on his debut in a major event.  Today the 1st of March is his birthday, however his birthday treat was yet to come in the plate event.

In the first round Mike was pitted against Steve Bennett and duly won through this all Glossop affair 2-1.  After that he beat Overseal's Melanie Adams in the quarter finals and Aaron Cahoon in the semi final, which left him awaiting an opponent in the final.  In the final he was ironically set to face John Mc Mahon who had dispatched Mike in round one.  Mike went for revenge and according to my eye witnesses was rather unfortunate as he had a black bounce back out and lost the final 2-1.  However he did walk away with some money for his appearance in the plate final and gained some valuable experience.  The rest of Derbyshire must be wondering just how many more Glossop players there can be.

In the main event final Steve Hewlett who lives just down he road in Manchester lost 5-2 to Mark White but picked up a tidy profit for his great day.  Mark White goes from strength to strength as he follows up his win at event 1 of the Premier Pool Tour in Barnsley last week with another winners cheque.

The Comeback Kings

To be totally honest the trip to Overseal is a long one on a good day but coupled with  massive tail backs on the M1 it took a whopping 2 and a half hours to get there.  Luckily we did eventually get there but the journey must have taken a bit out of a few players as Glossop made the most lacklustre start to a match that they have made in 12 months. The last time Glossop started this poorly they found themselves 6-0 down v the same Overseal side 12 months earlier.  Things didn't get off to the best start as Steve Bennett had one roll off to middle bag with two visits v Dave Fernandez and the frame at his mercy and subsequently Glossop were 1-0 down instead of 1-0 up.  Adam Clark levelled up after Les Mahood had squandered a good chance.  Richard Cummings on debut was all at sea against Paul Bradford and struggled once things became tactical and it quickly became 2-1 to Overseal.  Again Glossop fought back as The Porn Star (Tony Smith) beat Mel Adams to make it 2-2.  Glossop looked to have shook off their early sloppy play when Paul Smith cleared v Gordon Murray only to leave his black in a dodgy pockets jaws and Glossop found themselves 3-2 down.  Things got worse as the next frame was moved from 9th to 6th as John Chambers had to play a doubles semi final in the other room in the Overseal League.  Both players squandered good chances before a ball stayed out of the middle bag for James to the amazement of both players and John quickly cleared to make it 4-2.  Scott West beat Stuart Crook and Perry Roberts rattled his black against Kyle Bowler who fluked 3 shots in the frame made it 6-2 Glossop were really rattled.  However they say matches often have turning points and when Richard Foster had his last ball stay up with the frame won against Paul Roberts Glossop could have been 7-2 and at the point of no return but escaped the set 6-3.

In set 2 things went from bad to worse as Mike Morrison also on debut broke and got dished by Dave Fernandez although it was a mad dish and could have gone badly wrong as he left his final ball for a tough corner bag double but made it.  Things were changing though as The Porn Star rattled off one quickly for a 2 out of 2 v Les Mahood and it was 7-4, the Mexican beat Paul Bradford who looks a very good player on the two occasions I have seen him play and it was 7-5 Steve actually took out a really good finish saving his 2 visits for his black after a deliberate foul from Paul.  The comeback was on as Clarky made it 2 out of 2 beating Mel Adams, the ref failed to spot a foul on a ball from Mel who missed a long black but Adam made no mistake with his last two balls and it was now 7-6.  James Hardy levelled things up with a routine win v Gordon Murray and it was now Overseal who looked rattled.  Both Paul Roberts and Scott West appeared to be feeling it but Robbo who had made only one poor shot in his frame eventually got an error and made no mistake and it was 8-7 Glossop.  The County Champ (Jiff) then had a battle as Kyle Bowler was under the kosh but kept causing problems when Jiff thought he had it won.  Eventually he got two visits and cleared and it was 9-7.  Stuart Crook who didn't show his practice form on a table he quite clearly wasn't enjoying suffered defeat to Rich Foster although he can still consider himself a little unlucky as Rich missed his black by so much he made a half ball hit on one of Stuarts yellows to pot it.  9-8 up and Perry is in the position he loves (last, with everything to play for).  I may be bias but I have never seen someone who is that much of a machine that they can hold it together that well regardless of situation, opponent or score line.  When he faced John Chambers I expected it to be a long affair but it couldn't be further from the truth.  Perry broke and came up dry, John went for it but his second ball looked mighty tight and it rattled, Perry went game instead of playing defensive and to be fair everything was on.  He cleared without ever looking like missing despite being Chinese on his last ball and that was that.  Glossop made a stunning comeback and nicked it on the finishing line.  The game was played in good spirits and both teams will probably wonder for a long time how it finished 10-8 to Glossop although, Glossop will feel that if they hadn't started like a car stuck in reverse they may have had a slightly easier outing.

World Champ Comes To Town

To be honest a lot of Glossop missed out on meeting and playing the World Champion Gareth Potts at the Hollingworth Con's Club.  This is a massive shame because the Hollingworth boys put on a really good show.

Picture- Stuart who put the exhibition on before beating the World Champ!

Gareth is a two time world champion and is the current holder of the crown after winning it this year in Blackpool.  He is based in Stoke on Trent and is an amazing talent in the pool world.  Gareth played 22 frames against players lucky enough to be picked out of the hat after paying the princely sum of one English pound per ticket.  There was a free buffet and a trick shot exhibition which was the only real let down as Gaz struggled to do the tricks himself although some of them were very hard indeed.  I also embarrassed myself by failing to dish when I had a peach of a break, however I have made a career out of that!!!!!

Picture-  Mr Glossoppool with his arse falling out in more ways than one!

So many people will be having a good laugh at that one!, least I am a good sport.
